3 Secrets to Acing that Interview
In strict order of importance:
1) Social Media
2) Social Media
3) Social Media
Okay, okay, that’s not fair, you were clickbaited into that one I admit. Here me out though, for your own sake, PLEASE! It truly is for your own good.
Seriously now, how many years are we into the modern Social Media revolution by now…9? You’ve heard time, time, and time again to be careful what you post on your Facebook and Instagram. You listened to preachy, stodgy, boring college professor’s harp on keeping your FB page clean. You’ve ignored your “know nothing” parents each of the last thousand times they begged you to clean up your selfies. You’ve muted out the news media on every conceivable medium as they spout Facebook posting statistics ad nauseum.
Not that you’ll pay me any more attention than people you actually know and trust, I know my recently career age son certainly reverts to tuning the old man out…but, come on, let’s chug some coffee, get focused, get your notebook or Evernote App out, and take note.
I am a hiring manager. I hire directly for AllSearch. I hire on behalf of dozens of world class companies around this great nation. People like me will directly decide whether or not to hire you, and it’s going to involve our opinions, right or wrong. Take a wild stab in the dark at the first 3 things I check when vetting a new candidate for any hiring purpose no matter what the job, no matter what their resume says. That’s correct, in order of importance they are:
1) Social Media
2) Social Media
3) Social Media
Judge us if you like, while you’re at it, judge your little brother for taking the biggest cookie, as well as your dog for licking the remnants of your prime rib out of the top of the garbage can…don’t fight human nature…adapt to it.
Personality is outstanding, let’s see a little life (see odd corporate Exec pic above), a differential, a spark, but please believe that if you expect someone to invite you to join their organization, there exists a limit to the acceptability of your social media sharing, there is an edge you mustn’t cross. When you are writing the checks, you can get back to your unedited lifestyle.
Please…please…and one last please…do not spend a half decade of hard earned time, and most likely the next 10 years of student loan payments only to lose your dream job before you even had a chance to land it by posting those oh so impressive keg stands, oh so skimpy clothing, and oh so gross late night scenes all over the un-deletable foreverness of Social Media.
If you have any specific questions about what you can do (or what you shouldn’t do!) to be the best employee you can be, please never hesitate to reach out to me at brianc@allsearchinc.com anytime with any career minded questions.
